Do you wonder how much schooling is necessary for a career in Cytotechnology?

A career in cytotechnology offers multiple career pathways to fit each individual. 

 

Cytotechnologists typically complete a four to five year program through an accredited college or university.  College coursework includes biology, cell biology, chemistry, anatomy & physiology, and histology which can be completed at a big university or a community college.  The last one to two years is spent at the cytotechnology school learning how to examine cells under a microscope.

 

Here are some examples of clinical lab jobs and their typical educational requirements:

 

Cytology Prep Technician

  • High school diploma/GED

Cytotechnologist

  • Bachelor's degree, completion of an accredited Cytotechnology program and passing of a certification exam

Cytology Supervisor

  • Bachelor's degree, completion of an accredited Cytotechnology program, passing of a certification exam and three - five years of experience
